Skip the Crowds at Tunnel View: Try This Yosemite Hike Instead

We found a scenic Yosemite trail just above Tunnel View—and had the view all to ourselves.

Artist Point’s peaceful overlook, offering a fresh take on Yosemite’s iconic valley.

During a winter trip to Yosemite with my sister, we set out to see Tunnel View—but from a new perspective. That decision led us to discover Artist Point, a peaceful trail just above the famous overlook. What we found was the same jaw-dropping view, minus the crowds.

The Downsides of Tunnel View

A few summers ago, I visited Yosemite with my family. We made the obligatory stop at Tunnel View, and while the panorama never fails to captivate, the throngs of visitors made it challenging to truly soak in the moment—and snag a photo without someone in the frame.

Finding the Trailhead

Finding the Artist Point trailhead is straightforward. It starts at the Tunnel View parking lot, just behind the right-hand side. You’ll follow the Pohono Trail for about half a mile before turning left onto the old Wawona Road.

My sister and I got an early start, entering the park before the rangers were stationed. If you want to be sure to get a parking spot, it’s best to start early—or be ready to circle the lot until something opens up, as many visitors stop only briefly for a quick photo.

Late February trail conditions—surprisingly warm, but still a bit soggy!

What to Expect on the Trail

We hiked in late February and were surprised to find no ice on the trail. An unseasonably warm stretch of weather meant that the first part of our hike was actually through a trickling creek. If you’re doing this hike in winter, be prepared for wet shoes—and potential icy patches.

Glimpses of Yosemite Valley peek through the trees as you climb.

The trail begins with a gradual ascent, offering intermittent glimpses of Tunnel View through the trees. After about half a mile, you’ll reach the left turn onto old Wawona Road, a former paved path now mostly reclaimed by nature. The wide trail hugs the mountainside, with the occasional patch of asphalt a reminder of its past. As you continue, the trail rewards you with breathtaking views, culminating in a stunning, open vista.

The View at the End

We had the entire viewpoint to ourselves—perfect for a snack and a moment of stillness.

Reaching the end of the trail, we were greeted by a breathtaking, unobstructed view. The iconic granite cliffs, waterfalls, and valley below were all visible—but without the usual crowds. We found a comfy spot on some rocks, enjoyed a snack, and soaked in the tranquility for about 30 minutes. The entire time we were at the viewpoint, we didn’t encounter any other hikers, and it wasn’t until we were almost back to the parking lot that we saw anyone else.

Final Thoughts

If you're looking for an alternative to the crowds of Tunnel View and want a short but rewarding adventure, Artist Point is absolutely worth the effort. It’s the perfect blend of solitude, beauty, and Yosemite magic.
